There's nothing quite like the nostalgia of summer swimming as a kid. You didn't need a beach vacation or a fancy resort, you just needed a neighbor with a decent-sized pool and a cooler full of juice boxes. Bonus points if they had one of those floaties shaped like a giant turtle or a pool noodle stash that could take on a small aquatic supply store. After a few hours of splashing around, you'd towel off with one of those crusty sun-bleached towels, sit on the hot pavement, and eat a soggy sandwich stuffed with chips while dripping pool water into the bag of Doritos. Peak childhood.

Fast-forward to adulthood, and now I’m trying to recreationally swim laps at my gym. And... it’s humbling. How are you supposed to time up your breath with your strokes? I’m out here constantly feeling like I'm about to drown while the lifeguard definitely regrets clocking in. Doing cardio with a limited amount of oxygen is not for the weak.
Moral of the story is, as a grown-up, you need at least one friend with a pool, preferably the kind who doesn’t judge your doggy paddle and looks the other way when you plug your nose to go underwater.
